Iron-reinforced wooden strong box stenciled “WELLS FARGO & CO” across the front panel, retaining traces of its original green paint and period hardware. The lid interior is stenciled “Manufactured by J.Y. Ayer, 1140 Seventeenth St., S.F. CAL,” identifying a known San Francisco maker of express boxes for Wells Fargo during the late 1800s. The box features iron corner guards, heavy strapping, a staple-style locking hasp, and a large cast iron Wells Fargo-marked padlock. Leather carrying handles are mounted at each end; one remains attached, the other is detached but accompanies the box.
