Express strong box, painted green with heavy iron strapping, wood construction, and partial original stenciling reading “WELLS FARGO.” Retains original applied leather side handles and iron hasp closure. The interior lid features two Wells Fargo & Co. Express money order labels from Livermore and San Rafael, California. Marked with Ayer’s maker stamp on the side, indicating manufacture by Ayer & Co., a known supplier of express and stagecoach equipment during the gold rush and western expansion era. These strong boxes were essential to Wells Fargo’s operations, used to securely transport gold dust, coins, currency, and important documents by stagecoach and later by rail. Locked, chained, and often kept under guard or within arm’s reach of an express messenger or armed shotgun rider, they symbolized frontier commerce and security in a time of frequent highway robberies.
