.22RF Short. 3” barrel cluster. SN: 492 . Blued barrels, engraved silver-plated brass frame, color casehardened hammer, rosewood grips. Left side of frame marked in four lines “WM W. MARSTON/NEW YORK CITY/PATENTED/MAY 26, 1857”. Frame engraved with loose New York style foliate scrolls with simple intertwined lines on the back strap. Marston produced about 1,500 of these single action, spur trigger, tip down, three-barrel derringers between 1858 and 1864. Of those the large majority were produced with a sliding knife blade attached to the barrels. The 3” clip point bowie style blade found on this example is considered early production and is typically found on guns in the 1 to 800 serial number range with about 800 of this type of pistol believed to have been produced. A very scarce and very nice condition American derringer from the period of the American Civil War. Markings and engraving remain clear and crisp. Mechanically functional action, including the chamber indicator/selector switch and rotating firing pin. Bores good, moderately oxidized and lightly pitted with good rifling. Grips fine and crisp with some light handling marks.
