.22RF Short. 3” barrel cluster. SN: 857 . Lightly engraved blued barrels, engraved silver-plated brass frame, color casehardened hammer, smooth ivory grips. Left side of frame marked in four lines “WM W. MARSTON/PATENTED/MAY 26, 1857/NEW YORK CITY”. Frame engraved with loose New York style foliate scrolls with simple intertwined lines on the barrels and backstrap. Marston produced about 1,500 of these single action, spur trigger, tip down, three-barrel derringers between 1858 and 1864. Of those the large majority were produced with a sliding knife blade attached to the barrels. This is one of the much less common examples with no knife blade, of which most estimates believe only about 300 were made, and they are found in the serial number range of 800 to 1,100. Barrels with some traces of blue and an attractive, smooth plum brown patina. Frame with most of the silver plating intact, which is deeply tarnished. Markings and engraving remain clear and crisp. Not mechanically functional. The firing pin mechanism does not move as it should to change which barrel is being fired. The chamber indicator does not move either and is frozen in place. Bores good, moderately oxidized and lightly pitted with good rifling. Grips very good with nice age and a mellow cream color. Left grip does not seat quit flush against the frame, possibly due to shrinkage.
