A monumental and historically important cast-iron street light from San Francisco’s famed Path of Gold series, designed by sculptor Arthur Putnam and manufactured by the Joshua Hendy Co. of San Francisco. Installed along Market Street beginning in 1916—from the Ferry Building to Castro Street—the Path of Gold standards became enduring symbols of the city’s rebirth and modern identity following the 1906 earthquake. This example, measuring approximately 10 feet in height, features a three-section cast-iron body of exceptional sculptural detail, including relief panels depicting the “Winning of the West” with pioneers, ox-drawn wagons, horses, pumas, Indigenous figures, and prospectors on horseback. The base and shaft are enriched with acanthus and scrollwork ornament, surmounted by a domed lantern head. Restored to the original color specifications of the Market Street lamps, the piece displays the distinctive gilded and bronze tones that inspired the name Path of Gold. The lamp disassembles into three main components (head, body, and base) and weighs over 1,000 pounds assembled. Historical Note: Joshua Hendy (1829–1891) founded the Hendy Iron Works in 1856, California’s first major foundry, which produced mining equipment and later large-scale civic castings. Working with Arthur Putnam—renowned for his bronze animal sculptures and public monuments—Hendy’s firm realized the Path of Gold project, blending Beaux-Arts design and Western iconography.
