A monumental precision bullion scale manufactured in San Francisco by William Albert Schmolz, the city’s pioneering scientific instrument and assay balance maker. The black lacquered base is lettered STANDARD BULLION BALANCE in gilt. Accompanied by period documentation and a printed trade broadside advertising “Balances for Sale by W. Schmolz,” listing U.S. standard weights for gold and silver coins. Research notes cite an 1871 report by George Davidson of the U.S. Coast Survey identifying this as the first precision balance manufactured in California, produced for the San Francisco Branch Mint. Davidson remarked on Schmolz’s innovative adjustable central knife-edge beam, a refinement not used by other U.S. makers. William Albert Schmolz (1827–1891) was a German-born instrument maker who established a workshop in San Francisco in the early 1850s. A pioneer in the design of surveying and assay instruments on the West Coast, he published a manual for surveyors in 1859 and secured a U.S. patent for a solar reflector in 1867. His firm supplied transit instruments, balances, and mining-related equipment to California’s Gold Rush–era infrastructure. Dimensions: 53½ × 15 × 47¼ in. high; pans 9¾ in. diameter.
