14K gold California buckle utilizing the Cummings-patent spring-clasp mechanism, manufactured by R. B. Gray & Co., a respected San Francisco firm active from the 1870s through the late 19th century. The buckle features high-relief engraved vignettes of the California State Seal, set within a stippled ground and framed by raised scroll borders—an excellent example of post–Gold Rush California goldwork. R. B. Gray & Co. was known for producing quality buckles, watch chains, and fraternal jewelry, and later became associated with the California Jewelry Co.
