14K gold California buckle utilizing the Cummings-patent spring-clasp mechanism, manufactured by R. B. Gray & Co., a respected San Francisco firm active from the 1870s through the late 19th century. The buckle features high-relief engraved vignettes of the California State Seal, set within a stippled ground and framed by raised scroll borders—an excellent example of post–Gold Rush California goldwork. R. B. Gray & Co. was known for producing quality buckles, watch chains, and fraternal jewelry, and later became associated with the California Jewelry Co. Examples of Gray’s patented buckles are represented in major Western collections, including one in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Dimensions: 2 1/4 x 1 1/2 in.
