Marked “ROBBINS & LAWRENCE CO. / WINDSOR, VT” and “PATENT 1849” across the top and sides of the barrel. Fitted with rosewood grips and German silver escutcheons. Complete with its original period leather shoulder holster rig and eagle buckle belt marked “M. COHEN & BRO / SAN FRANCISCO CAL.” M. Cohen & Brother were prominent military and police outfitters in San Francisco from the early 1860s through the 1880s. Their eagle-emblem belts were widely used by California militia, firemen, and lawmen during the post–Gold Rush and Civil War period. The inclusion of the belt and holster suggests this set likely saw use in California or the western frontier during the 1860s–70s. This pistol represents one of the earliest American repeating pocket pistols, developed before cartridge systems were widely adopted. Robbins & Lawrence’s design emphasized concealability and multi-shot capacity, and their guns were popular during the Gold Rush and westward expansion period.
