A scarce reverse-painted glass advertising sign promoting Buffalo O.P.S. Old Bourbon, distributed by Geo. E. Dierssen & Co., Sole Agents.
George E. Dierssen (1872–1909) entered Sacramento’s liquor trade in 1894, establishing a retail business before expanding into wholesale distribution, where he marketed proprietary whiskey brands including Buffalo Bourbon and Old Private Stock (O.P.S.) Bourbon. Following his death in 1909, the business continued under family ownership for a number of years. Reverse-painted glass signs were among the most expensive forms of commercial advertising produced during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Because of the fragile nature of the reverse-painted decoration, well-preserved survivors are increasingly scarce.

Condition
Not examined out of frame. Examination under ultraviolet light revealed no indication of restoration. The reverse-painted decoration remains well preserved with expected light wear and scattered losses around the outer perimeter, consistent with age.

The Estate of Mike Dolcini (1946–2012), Sacramento, California. Widely regarded as one of the foremost Western bottle collectors and excavators of his generation, Dolcini was recognized for his expertise in California Gold Rush-era bottles, Western bitters, and nineteenth-century glass. Over several decades, he also assembled a carefully curated collection of Western advertising with a particular emphasis on Sacramento history.
