Original etching by Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (Dutch, 1606–1669), depicting the theologian Johannes Uytenbogaert (1557–1644), preacher to Prince Maurice of Orange and a leading figure of the Dutch Remonstrant movement. Executed in 1635, the composition presents the scholar seated at his desk surrounded by books and manuscripts, exemplifying Rembrandt’s extraordinary ability to convey both intellectual presence and psychological depth through the medium of etching. The portrait is considered one of the artist’s finest printed works and is catalogued as the fifth state, with the date “1635” visible within the plate. An important example of seventeenth-century Dutch printmaking by one of history’s greatest masters.
