Limited deluxe edition consisting of the complete suite of 16 aquatints, each issued in a half-parchment portfolio and signed by the artist, as specified for Ausgabe B I. As stated in the edition notice, Ausgabe B I (numbered 1–100) comprises only the sixteen aquatints and does not include the additional 84 lithographs found in the larger Vorzugs-Ausgabe. This example, numbered 21, is therefore complete as issued for this edition. Ecce Homo remains one of Grosz’s most important and controversial portfolios, a searing indictment of Weimar society originally subject to censorship proceedings shortly after publication. The aquatints represent the most refined and desirable component of the project, prized for their tonal richness and painterly depth compared to the lithographic plates. Issued by Wieland Herzfelde’s Malik-Verlag in Berlin in 1923.
