The drawing is accompanied by a handwritten letter dated May 1950 from Dr. Franz Kieslinger, a Viennese art historian, court-certified expert, published author, and longtime specialist for Vienna’s Dorotheum auction house, whose career included the examination and attribution of Old Master works. Kieslinger identified the subject as “the antique Neptune after Michelangelo,” stated that the drawing was an original work by the celebrated Bolognese painter Guido Reni, and specifically noted the unusual survival of the early transfer grid.
