Oil on canvas depicting Spider Rock in Canyon de Chelly, Arizona, rendered in Kondos’ bold, modernist palette and structured brushwork. The composition centers the vertical rock formation against simplified canyon planes, using bold passages of blues, ochres, and greens to convey monumentality and atmosphere, distilled into Kondos’ characteristic painterly forms.
Gregory Kondos, a Sacramento-based painter and longtime professor at California State University, Sacramento, is regarded as one of California’s leading postwar landscape artists. Influenced by early California modernists and Bay Area Figurative painters, his work bridges representation and abstraction. His landscapes of California and the American Southwest are widely collected and held in institutions including the Crocker Art Museum.
