An oil on board by George Demont Otis (1879–1962), signed lower right. The reverse is inscribed “Fisher Folks – Pyramid Lake, Nevada, 1933” and bears a George Demont Otis Estate stamp. “Fisher Folks” was a common expression during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, equivalent to the modern term fisherfolk, referring to the people and communities whose lives and livelihoods centered on fishing.

Located northeast of Reno within the Pyramid Lake Paiute Reservation, Pyramid Lake is one of the oldest lakes in North America and among the most iconic landscapes of the Great Basin. For centuries the lake sustained the Northern Paiute people through its abundant fishery, particularly Lahontan cutthroat trout and the endemic cui-ui sucker, while later supporting an important commercial fishing industry. As Nevada remained sparsely populated during the early twentieth century, plein air paintings depicting the state’s distinctive landscapes were produced in comparatively small numbers. This 1933 view represents an uncommon example of Otis’s work beyond California.
