A watercolor and gouache on paper by William Rickarby Miller (American, born England, 1818–1893), signed and dated lower right, W.R. Miller, 1874. The composition depicts travelers along a wooded country road beneath mature butternut trees, with distant hills and expansive summer clouds rendered in Miller’s characteristic luminous palette and careful naturalistic detail.

Born in Staindrop, County Durham, England, Miller immigrated to the United States in 1845 and established himself as one of the foremost American watercolorists of the nineteenth century. He exhibited at the National Academy of Design and earned recognition through the American Art-Union for his finely observed landscapes of New York and the northeastern United States. Although associated with the landscapes of the Hudson River School, Miller’s work is distinguished by its intimate scale, meticulous detail, and quiet narrative quality.

A period handwritten inscription preserved on the reverse identifies the work as Road Scene – Butternut Trees, Patterson, N.J., providing valuable documentary evidence linking the watercolor to a specific New Jersey locale. The inscription was retained during later reframing, and the lot is accompanied by a 2019 conservation invoice from Zukor Art Conservation, Oakland, California, documenting professional cleaning and stabilization.
