Gold Presentation Cane to S.W. Eccles, D&RGW Railway, Dated 1886
A 14k gold presentation cane inscribed to S.W. Eccles / Genl F & P Agent / D.&R.G.W. R’y / by patrons of the Company. The end cap is engraved with the date August 31st, 1886. The gold handle features deeply chased floral scrollwork and is mounted on a mahogany shaft with a steel ferrule. Eccles is believed to have been a General Freight & Passenger Agent for the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railway during the height of railroad expansion into the American West. This elegant cane likely marked his retirement or commemoration of service in 1886. Such personalized gold canes were tokens of esteem and often given by colleagues, employees, or patrons to recognize dedication or leadership within the rail industry.
