An oil on canvas depicting California’s spring wildflower season, signed and dated lower right, 1931. Inscribed “Verbenas” on the reverse stretcher, the painting portrays a broad inland landscape enlivened by a winding seasonal creek and carpets of native California wild verbena. Blooming from approximately March through June following winter rains, these vibrant displays have long been among the most celebrated features of Southern California’s valleys and desert foothills.

George Demont Otis devoted much of his career to recording California’s native landscapes at a time when rapid development was transforming the state. An early advocate for conservation, his paintings helped foster appreciation for California’s natural beauty and contributed to the movement that ultimately led to the preservation of areas such as Point Reyes National Seashore. The painting retains its original redwood stretcher, crafted from a timber native to California’s Pacific coast.
