An oil on canvas by noted California Impressionist George Demont Otis (1879–1962), depicting the rugged Sonoma coastline with powerful surf crashing against rocky outcroppings beneath an expansive sky. Executed with broad, confident brushwork and a vibrant palette of blues, greens, and warm earth tones, the composition captures the movement and atmosphere of the Northern California coast that became one of the artist’s most celebrated subjects.

Otis studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, Cooper Union, and the National Academy of Design under prominent artists including John F. Carlson and William Merritt Chase before establishing himself as one of California’s leading landscape painters. A dedicated conservationist, he was instrumental in fostering appreciation for California’s natural beauty, and his paintings helped inspire preservation efforts that culminated in the establishment of Point Reyes National Seashore. His works are represented in numerous public and private collections, and he is recognized as an important figure in the development of Western Impressionism.

This painting is illustrated in The California Collection (p. 43) and was exhibited at the California State Library, Sacramento (1996–1997), and the Sonoma County Museum, Santa Rosa (1998).
