During the first quarter of the twentieth century, the Monterey Peninsula emerged as one of America’s most important artistic destinations. Drawn by its crystalline coastal light, rugged granite headlands, and windswept Monterey cypress, artists including William Ritschel, Armin Hansen, Granville Redmond, Guy Rose, Charles Rollo Peters, and Franz Bischoff made repeated painting excursions to Carmel and nearby Point Lobos, helping define what is now recognized as California Impressionism.

Painted directly from nature with broad, confident brushwork and a heightened sensitivity to light and atmosphere, this work embodies the ideals of the plein air movement that transformed California landscape painting during the early twentieth century.
