Left side of barrel marked “HOPKINS & ALLEN AMRS CO/NORWICH, CONN, U.S.A.” These double action only, tipping barrel, folding trigger single shot vest pocket sized pistols were introduced circa 1898 and remained in production through the early 1920s with production numbers estimated at about 1,400. This pistol is accompanied by an original red covered pasteboard box with an end label that reads “HOPKINS & ALLEN/DERRINGER/22 Cal. Pearl and Engraved”. The letter “B” is written in ink between the caliber marking and the word “pearl”, which might suggest the box originally held a blued derringer. This pistol and the accompanying box are pictured and discussed on page 215 of Eberhart & Wilson’s The Deringer in America Volume II - The Cartridge Period . At the time of writing only two of these very rare pasteboard boxes were known to exist. A wonderful condition example of a scarce, tiny derringer from the end of the period when such guns were being produced and carried on a regular basis. Very fine to excellent. Metal with nearly all of the bright nickel intact with only the most minor wear some tiny freckles of surface oxidation and some small areas of old, dried, discolored oil. Markings and engraving remain clear and crisp. Mechanically functional action. Grips fine and crisp with some loss to the gilt and moderate oxidation on the monogram discs, and tiny surface crack at one of the screw escutcheons. Box with moderate wear and exterior finish loss with scuffing and moderate surface loss. Corners are starting to separate with the staples holding the corners together. Interior to moderate wear as well.
