The “Tillie” named here is believed to reference Howard “Tillie” Howard (1871–1912), a nationally notorious madam who rose to prominence in El Paso’s red-light district in the 1890s. Tillie was a flamboyant character of the Southwest, known for her diamonds, public persona, and close ties with gamblers, lawmen, and saloon keepers.
