Oil on canvas depicting Lake Tahoe beneath an expansive field of Kondos blue, with the distant Sierra shoreline reduced to bold horizontal bands and a solitary sailboat punctuating the still water. Signed and dated “G. Kondos 1986” lower right; titled, signed, and dated on the reverse.

Painted in 1986, this exhibition-scale work depicts the view from the deck of the commissioning family’s Beach Drive residence in Tahoe Keys. During a visit to Lake Tahoe, Gregory Kondos photographed the scene before returning to his Sacramento studio, where he transformed it into this monumental composition. Executed during a decade widely regarded as among the strongest of the artist’s career, the painting embodies the qualities collectors most admire in Kondos’s work: luminous “Kondos blue,” simplified forms, bold horizontal structure, and a restrained modern aesthetic that distills the landscape to its essential elements.

Lake Tahoe ranks among Kondos’s most sought-after subjects, alongside the Sacramento River, the Delta, and Yosemite. The commissioning family also owned Twin Pines, the celebrated Julia Morgan-designed Lake Tahoe estate, reflecting a long association with the region. Retained by the original family since its completion and offered publicly for the first time, this painting represents an exceptional opportunity to acquire a fresh-to-market work with documented history. Demand for important paintings from Kondos’s mature period has remained exceptionally strong, highlighted by Witherell’s record-setting 2022 sale of Kondos’s 1989 Levee House for $157,300, underscoring continued collector appreciation for major works from this defining period of his career.
