A romantic Gilded Age allegory signed “A.D. Cooper 1876,” this pastel painting depicts a reclining female figure crowned with flowers and wrapped in a sheer star-patterned robe, her flowing auburn hair embellished with blossoms. The composition was later reproduced as the cover image for California March (1879), composed by W. Stuckenholz and published in San Francisco by M. Gray. The sheet music, which explicitly credits Cooper as the artist, helped popularize this early example of his theatrical allegorical style.
