Little Whirlwind was a member of the Lakota (Teton Sioux) and is recorded as having performed with Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show in the late 19th century, often selected for public portraits due to his commanding presence. Cincinnati artist John Hauser, noted for his portrayals of Plains Indian leaders, received permission from the U.S. government in the 1890s to visit Native tribes and record their likenesses, making numerous trips to reservations across the American West.
