An assembled Rococo Revival laminated rosewood parlor suite in the pattern commonly referred to as “Henry Clay.” Comprising a settee (65 x 32 x 42 in. high) with applied floral crest, an arm chair (23 x 34 x 42 in. high), and two side chairs (18 x 28 x 36 1/2 in. high). All pieces exhibit deep button-tufted upholstery, shaped seat rails, and intricate fruit and floral carvings typical of John Henry Belter’s workshop. About J. H. Belter: John Henry Belter (1804–1863) was the premier American cabinetmaker of Rococo Revival furniture. Working in New York City, he patented a process of laminating and carving rosewood that allowed for ornate and deeply sculptural designs, making his pieces among the most prized American furnishings of the 19th century.
