An exceptional Victorian four-piece bedroom suite attributed to J.B. Luchsinger & Son of San Francisco, California’s premier 19th-century cabinetmaker. Comprising a monumental bedstead, drop well dresser, flat top dresser, and marble-top night stand. Executed in select exotic hardwoods likely imported from South America, with secondary woods of native Western species including redwood, typical of high-grade California cabinetmaking of the period. This suite is marked by its monumental scale, deep relief carving, and architectural presence, features consistent with the finest documented works by Luchsinger. Founded by Swiss immigrant John B. Luchsinger in 1864, the firm became renowned for their “first class, custom” furniture, furnishing many of California’s grandest residences and public buildings including the California State Capitol and the San Francisco Mint. Their factory employed steam power and master craftsmen capable of executing the most recherché designs, as exemplified in this set. The two dressers retain mirrors manufactured by Whittier, Fuller & Co., the premier San Francisco and Sacramento glass and mirror supplier of the era, further supporting regional manufacture.
