A classic botanical composition by celebrated modernist photographer Alma Lavenson, Eucalyptus Leaves exemplifies her precisionist style and elegant tonal control. Originally taken in 1933, this photograph was printed in 1987—the year of Lavenson’s ninetieth birthday—as part of a tribute by The Friends of Photography in San Francisco. A leading figure among California modernists and an associate of Group f.64, Lavenson’s pictorial roots evolved into a sharply focused aesthetic under the influence of Edward Weston and Imogen Cunningham. This example reflects her deep concern with design and natural form. The print is accompanied by an original typed provenance sheet from The Friends of Photography and is titled, dated, and attributed on the verso. Sight: 11 5/8 x 8 5/8 in. Framed: 14 x 17 in.
