An extraordinary 1930s baseball relic consisting of a Pie Traynor model youth left-handed fielder’s glove bearing 23 authenticated signatures of Baseball Hall of Famers and major league stars, accompanied by its original custom cherrywood presentation case hand-carved with a likeness of Honus Wagner. Beckett Authentication Services has authenticated the glove and its signatures, including Honus Wagner, Joe DiMaggio, Dom DiMaggio (twice), Pie Traynor, Joe Gordon, Charlie Berry, Lena Blackburne, Eddie Carnett, Lou Stringer, Benny McCoy, and others. The signatures of Joe E. Brown, Dizzy Dean, Gene Lillard, Connie Mack, Gus Mancuso, and Arnold Statz are noted by Beckett as completely or partially enhanced in an unknown hand. Family history relates that the glove was signed during Pacific Coast League exhibition games at Los Angeles’ Wrigley Field between approximately 1934 and 1936, when major league clubs and PCL teams regularly played before enthusiastic West Coast crowds. According to the family, the young owner’s father presented the glove to players before games, with several—including Dizzy Dean—adding whimsical caricatures alongside their signatures. Following the collecting adventure, the boy’s grandfather crafted the accompanying cherrywood display case, hand-carving a portrait of Honus Wagner on the lid. The glove has reportedly remained preserved in that custom case for nearly ninety years, creating a remarkable and highly personal survival from baseball’s Golden Age.
