An oil on board by William Rickarby Miller (English/American, 1818–1893), signed, dated 1892, and inscribed “N.J.” lower left, depicting a moonlit view of the Hudson River at Hoboken with moored sailing vessels, a solitary figure walking a dog along the shoreline, and the distant skyline beyond. A period handwritten label on the reverse identifies the work as “Moonlight on the Hudson River, Hoboken, N.J.”

Born in England, Miller immigrated to the United States in 1845 and established himself as a respected landscape painter, watercolorist, and illustrator. Although he painted many of the same locations as artists of the Hudson River School, his work is distinguished by its intimate scale and careful observation rather than dramatic romanticism. Painted the year before his death, this tranquil moonlit river view reflects the artist’s mature treatment of atmosphere and light.
