A mixed-media, hand-worked proof combining etching with watercolor and gouache, signed lower right (“Thiebaud 1997”) and inscribed “Hand worked proof” and “with watercolor and gouache” in the lower margin. This work relates directly to Thiebaud’s important late-career explorations of steep, invented California topographies—precarious, stage-like landforms that merge memory, observation, and imagination. The elevated plateau, tightly compressed horizon, and exaggerated drop-off are consistent with the artist’s celebrated “cliff” and “ridge” series of the 1990s, compositions in which everyday California structures appear perched at the edge of dramatically vertical terrain. The present hand-worked proof displays Thiebaud’s characteristic cross-hatching, luminous color washes, and playful manipulation of perspective that defined his mature landscape vocabulary. Dimensions: Sight 17 1/4 x 20 in.; framed 26 1/4 x 29 in. Provenance: Private collection, Sacramento, California; acquired directly from the artist. Pickup & Shipping: Free pickup in Sacramento. Shipping via FedEx within the continental U.S. for $140 + 1.5% insurance (unless waived in writing). Combined lot shipping available.
