The rifle has a heavy octagonal barrel back action lock, double-set triggers, and iron mounts, including a patch box. There is a hole in the tang for a peep sight, and the forend cap is pewter. The top of the barrel is stamped W. Collins. The stock has a carved cheek rest, and finely checkered wrist. The gun has iron buckhorn sights. There is a small false muzzle. William Collins was born in Indiana in 1821, but by 1860 was working as a gunsmith in Crescent City, California. 49 1/2 inches long overall with a 33 inch barrel.
