A scarce heavy barreled percussion target rifle by Horace Hall Rowell, of Sonora, California, in .45 caliber. The rifle is half-stocked, with a back action lock, octagonal barrel, screw-set trigger, false muzzle, steel bar muzzle rest, and handsome brass mounts, including a serpentine shaped side plate. The forend cap is pewter. The side flat of the octagonal barrel has H.H. ROWELL, SONORA. CAL 1888 stamped on it, along with a geometric design representing the Oddfellows Fraternal Lodge. The lock plate and the peep sight are both stamped H.H. Rowell. There is a small steel post at the front sight that screws out. H.H. Rowell was born in New Hampshire in 1830, emigrating to California by way of the isthmus of Panama in 1853, relocating to Sonora in 1875, where he became one of California's most respected gun makers, winning may awards. He sold his business in 1907. Size: 48 inches long overall with a 31 1/2 inch barrel. Processing and shipping within the continental U.S. $85.00 plus 1.5% replacement cost insurance. Discounts given on combined lot shipping.
