A complementary pair of nineteenth-century European figural portrait canes illustrated in Vertical Art: The Enduring Beauty of Antique Canes and Walking Sticks, Figures 244 and 246 (p. 184). The first, Spain, circa 1830, is surmounted by a finely carved iv*ry bust of a distinguished Spanish nobleman wearing the insignia of the Order of the Golden Fleece (Toisón d’Or), mounted to a tortoiseshell shaft with a 14K gold collar confirmed by XRF analysis. Notes accompanying the collection indicate it was acquired in August 2020. The second, France, circa 1860, depicts the Enlightenment philosopher Voltaire (François-Marie Arouet, 1694–1778), carved in iv*ry and mounted to a malacca shaft with a hallmarked sterling silver collar testing .925 by XRF. Notes accompanying the collection indicate it was acquired in October 2025. Together these canes reflect the nineteenth-century European tradition of honoring celebrated historical figures through finely carved presentation walking sticks.
