A finely carved French figural cane depicting Henri Gatien, Comte Bertrand (1773–1844), one of Napoleon Bonaparte’s most devoted military officers and companions. Carved in iv*ry and mounted on a malacca shaft with an engraved 18K gold collar, the figure portrays Bertrand in military dress holding his bicorne hat, with finely detailed epaulettes, drapery, and court uniform. The reverse bears the handwritten inscription “Gnl Bertrand,” identifying the subject. Following Napoleon’s defeat at Waterloo, Bertrand accompanied Napoleon into exile on St. Helena, where he remained until the emperor’s death in 1821.
