Founded in New York in 1837 by Charles Lewis Tiffany, Tiffany & Co. became America’s foremost luxury retailer during the nineteenth century, establishing an international reputation for exceptional jewelry, silver, clocks, and decorative arts. By the 1870s, the firm had become the preferred source of luxury goods for America’s industrialists, financiers, and political leaders, importing the finest French bronzes, clocks, porcelains, and objets d’art while helping define the tastes of a rapidly growing class of affluent collectors.

This mantel clock reflects the aspirations of the Gilded Age, the period of remarkable economic expansion and cultural refinement that followed the Civil War. Coined by Mark Twain, the term describes an era in which immense fortunes transformed American collecting. The grand residences of families such as the Vanderbilt, Astor, Morgan, and Stanford dynasties were furnished with richly ornamented European decorative arts, many acquired through Tiffany & Co.’s celebrated New York showrooms.

The present example combines sculptural bronze figures, vibrant champlevé enamel decoration, and a finely proportioned architectural case characteristic of the French decorative arts embraced by Tiffany during this period. The dial is signed Tiffany & Co., while the brass movement is likewise marked “Tiffany & Co.” and numbered 3753, identifying it as a clock retailed through the firm’s New York establishment. More than a functional timepiece, it represents the craftsmanship, artistry, and international influence that established Tiffany & Co. as one of the defining luxury houses of nineteenth-century America.
