Completing the archive is a contemporary typed memorandum, also dated October 23, 1900, signed by Henry B. Ely and trustee Mynderse Holman, clarifying that the release did not apply to certain unpaid trustee commissions relating to trusts established for members of the Astor, Roosevelt, Van Alen, and Drayton families, as well as matters involving Caroline W. Astor and the James R. Roosevelt Jr. Trust. Together, the documents provide a remarkable window into the private legal and financial administration of one of America’s greatest fortunes at the turn of the twentieth century. More than simply bearing the signature of John Jacob Astor IV—later remembered as the wealthiest passenger lost aboard the RMS Titanic in 1912—the archive documents his active management of the Astor estate and identifies Henry B.
