Early 20th-century domed six-point San Francisco Police Department Sergeant’s badge, numbered 987. The face displays deep blue enameled lettering reading “SERGEANT” and “S.F. POLICE,” surrounding the applied 14K gold badge number. The star features finely hand-engraved foliate scrollwork throughout and a pronounced domed profile measuring approximately one-half inch in height, characteristic of high-grade Western law enforcement badges of the period. The reverse bears the maker’s mark of Irvine & Jachens, one of San Francisco’s foremost manufacturers of police badges, insignia, and civic emblems during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and is stamped “STERLING 14K.” The reverse also retains its original old-style hook and catch pinback assembly. As a Sergeant’s badge, this example would have identified a supervisory officer within one of the nation’s most historically significant municipal police departments.

Dimensions: 3 in. diameter. Weight approx.: 47 grams (1.51 troy oz.). Dome height approx.: 0.5 in.

Pickup & Shipping: Free Sacramento pickup. Shipping via FedEx within the continental U.S. for $45 plus 1.5% insurance (unless waived in writing). Combined lot shipping available.

Condition

Very good overall condition with an attractive, untouched patina and light surface wear consistent with age and service. Deep blue enameled lettering remains vibrant with only minor wear. Applied 14K gold badge numerals remain intact. Reverse retains crisp maker’s marks, STERLING 14K stamp, and the original hook and catch pinback assembly.
