A 14K gold cigarette case by Shreve & Co., San Francisco, presented by the China Mutual Life Insurance Company Ltd., Shanghai, to George Mooser in recognition of insurance business written in Shanghai between January 1, 1904, and January 1, 1905, totaling Taels 1,120,750.00. Founded in 1852, Shreve & Co. became one of California’s foremost jewelers and luxury retailers, renowned for its fine jewelry, silver, and decorative arts. The case retains its original 14K gold cigarette retainer, bears a cabochon jade thumbpiece, and is marked Shreve & Co. and 14K. XRF analysis confirms the gold content.
