Spencer Carbine, Model 1865, manufactured in Liege, Belgium for Brazil, and converted to .50-70 in 1877. Both manufacture and conversion were performed by the Belgian Firm of Falisse & Trappman using machinery purchased from the Spencer Company following the Civil War. These were an exact copy of the American Spencer, utilizing the same dies, and in the same caliber. This is an excellent example of the Spencer as made for the Brazilian Cavalry, although only about 300 of the original order of 1000 were actually delivered to Brazil. This appears to be on of those that was not delivered. It has the Belgian markings on both metal and wood, including the Falisse & Trappman 1873 stamp on the butt stock. The top of the breech is stamped Union Armoriere Belge, Liege. The number 8 is stamped on the trigger tang. The barrel band is stamped 1760. There are several Belgian stamps in the wood, and a large Liege proof stamp on the barrel. Size: 37 inches long with a 20 inch barrel.
