.22RF Short. 2” barrel. NSN. All brass construction with engraved frame, color casehardened hammer, smooth hardwood grips. Unmarked, with no identifying markings or proofs. Unknown maker, possibly of Continental origin. Frame engraved with flowing leaves with punch dot background. Single shot, single action, spur trigger, tip down barrel design with a removable pin that locks the action when inserted and allows the barrel to tip down when removed. The initials “LR” are engraved in cursive on the pivoting plate attached to the pin, which serves as a handle for the pin. The pin is attached to the frame of the pistol via a chain to keep it from being lost. This gun is published on page 266 of Eberhart & Wilson’s book The Deringer in America Volume II - The Cartridge Period , in the chapter on unknown derringers. An interesting and potentially one-of-a-kind watch pocket sized pistol that is well made and nicely decorated and worthy of some additional research and that is published in the leading reference on the subject.
