.22 RF Short. 2” barrel. NSN. Silver plated engraved brass frame, blued barrel, color casehardened hammer, smooth rosewood grips. Unmarked, no serial numbers, only 4 punch dots are noted as assembly marks on the frame under the grips and under the barrel. The frame is profusely engraved in a flowing New York style that is almost certainly the work of LD Nimschke’s shop. Like so many derringers of this pattern, it is a single shot, single action, spur trigger pistol with a pivoting barrel. This gun is published on page 266 of Eberhart & Wilson’s book The Deringer in America Volume II - The Cartridge Period , in the chapter on unknown derringers. A really lovely and very diminutive watch-pocket sized pistol that is only about 3.75” in overall length. Barrel with some strong traces of blue remaining, the balance turning plum. Frame with minute traces of tarnished silver, with a rich, dark bronze patina on the brass. Engraving remains clear and crisp. Mechanically functional action. Bore fair, moderately oxidized and with only traces of rifling. Grips about very good and fairly crisp with a tight crack on the lower edge of the left grip. Otherwise with some lightly scattered handling marks.
