Coiled Pit River basket of deep, rounded form, woven of willow, sedge root, and redbud bark, decorated with bold stepped geometric motifs and diamond devices in dark brown against a natural ground. The Pit River people traditionally occupied the upper Pit River drainage of northeastern California, extending from present-day Mount Shasta eastward toward the Nevada border. Coiled baskets of this type were woven for both household and ceremonial purposes.
