A complementary group of two California Native American baskets representing distinct regional weaving traditions. Included is a Mono Lake basket of flaring form, woven in coiled construction with bold stepped geometric ornament characteristic of the Mono people of the eastern Sierra Nevada and Mono Basin. Also included is a Yokut polychrome bottleneck basket, displaying the classic constricted-neck form traditionally used for storing and pouring seeds, water, and other provisions. The Yokut people occupied California’s southern San Joaquin Valley, where basketry reached exceptional technical refinement through the use of sedge root, redbud bark, and other native plant materials to create intricate polychrome designs.

Both baskets are in overall good condition with expected age-related wear and mellow, naturally aged coloration. The Yokut bottleneck basket retains its original form, though the decorative red yarn wrapped around the rim is largely lacking. No other significant structural issues observed.
