Peter Hayward (American/Hawaii, 1905–1993), Hawaiian rural landscape, oil on canvas, signed “Peter Hayward” lower left and dated February 25, 1978 on the stretcher verso. The composition depicts a dirt road winding through dense tropical vegetation toward distant mountains, with small figures and chickens animating the foreground. Executed with Hayward’s characteristic vigorous palette-knife technique, with heavily worked passages of impasto defining the palms, foliage, road and brilliant Hawaiian sky. Hayward specialized in the landscapes, seascapes and urban scenes of Hawaii and became particularly recognized for his ability to describe the islands’ varied tropical vegetation and topography through richly textured oil paint. He spent many of his later years working from a beachfront studio at Punaluʻu on Oʻahu.
