Signed lower left “H. T. Dranga,” this Hawaiian coastal landscape, painted near the artist’s home in Hilo, captures the quiet beauty of Hawaii’s eastern shoreline before the transformation brought by modern tourism. Framed by mature ironwood and banyan trees opening onto the Pacific beyond, the composition exemplifies Dranga’s firsthand documentation of the islands’ natural environment during the first half of the twentieth century. The reverse bears the handwritten title ”Beach Near Hilo” together with the original gallery price notation of ”$50.”

Born in Oxford, England, Helen Thomas Dranga (1906–1940) relocated to Hawaii at the turn of the twentieth century and lived in Hilo, where she spent much of her career painting the island’s distinctive landscapes. A member of the Hawaiian Society of Artists, her work is represented in the collections of the Honolulu Museum of Art and the Lyman Museum. Dranga is recognized today as one of the important early female painters of Hawaii, documenting the islands before the advent of large-scale tourism. Her paintings preserve the character of old Hawaii through firsthand observations of its natural coastline, tropical vegetation, and quiet island life.
