Large Roy Dean De Forest (1930-2007) oil on canvas painting A MIDWESTERN WINDOW. Inscribed on reverse, “Roy De Forest 1972 / Polymer Paint-Varnished / “A Midwestern Window.”
Dimensions: 71" x 57 1/2"
Midwestern Window is a vibrant and fantastical composition from Roy De Forest’s mature period, created during the height of his involvement with the Bay Area Funk Art and Nut Art movements. In this 1972 work, De Forest constructs a symmetrical tableau of boldly patterned human figures and stylized animals, interspersed with kaleidoscopic fields of dots and textures.
At the center, a totemic face radiates color and energy, surrounded by dense patterns of pointillist detail and playful symbolism. Horses — a recurring motif in De Forest’s visual vocabulary — and floral motifs evoke folk traditions while tapping into personal mythology. The title suggests a glimpse into Midwestern Americana, filtered through the artist’s surreal and humorous imagination.
Executed with his signature use of vivid color, flattened perspective, and obsessive dotting, Midwestern Window exemplifies De Forest’s distinctive narrative style and his commitment to a world of dreamlike, self-contained storytelling.

Provenance: From the Estate of Patsy Von Ranson, Crockett, California. Patsy studied at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland during a vibrant period when Roy De Forest, Clayton Bailey, and Robert Arneson were teaching. She was briefly married to artist Harold Schlotzhauer (b. 1949) and remained closely connected to her early circle of artist friends throughout her life. According to Roy De Forest’s widow, Patsy acquired the artwork directly from the artist. It was prominently displayed in her Crockett, California home.
