A monumental Native American covered storage basket from Northern California, finely coiled with geometric stepped triangle designs in dark brown against a natural background. The basket retains its original domed lid with wrapped knob finial. At 24 inches high, this is an exceptional example of utilitarian basketry created with remarkable symmetry and scale. Established in 1863 in Arcata, California, by Francis A. Brizard (1839–1904) and his sons Paul, Marcel, and Henry, A. Brizard supplied goods to nearby gold mining operations. According to family tradition, Paul A. Brizard (1871–1957) began marketing Native American baskets and cultural artifacts around the turn of the 20th Century through the family store on Main Street and a catalog titled Indian Baskets / Hupa & Klamath Tribes / A. Brizard Arcata, CA. The collection subsequently passed to Marcel’s son Alexander I. Brizard (1899–1972), then to his daughter Francis Brizard Hunt (1927–2021), and later to her daughter (b. 1953).
