Oil on panel, signed and dated lower left J.W. Alexander 95. A study of the reclining female form, executed with the fluid brushwork and tonal subtlety characteristic of Alexander’s mature style. The softly modeled figure is set against a darkened interior ground, her form emerging in delicate gradations of light that reveal the artist’s mastery of late 19th-century academic technique filtered through the tonalism of the American Gilded Age.
