The Vine epitomizes Frishmuth’s mastery of form and movement, capturing her lifelong fascination with dance and the expressive grace of the female figure. The work was inspired by a series of spontaneous poses struck by her model, Renée Wilde, during a sculpture class at her Sniffen Court studio in New York. Frishmuth developed the pose into one of her most celebrated compositions—depicting a woodland nymph arching in ecstatic motion, her body forming a lyrical S-curve as she lifts a trailing vine. Her dynamic modeling and refined surfaces convey both physical vitality and poetic abstraction. First cast in 1921, The Vine was later enlarged to over life-size for the National Sculpture Society’s 1923 exhibition at the Hispanic Society of America, where it earned Frishmuth the Julia A.
