Mixed media on paper, signed lower right “J. Hauser,” this portrait depicts White Horse, a Kiowa man known for his leadership and prominence in the Southern Plains. White Horse (Tsen-tainte) was a Kiowa war leader during the Indian Wars and was among the captives sent to Fort Marion in Florida in 1875. His dignified presence and regalia made him a frequent subject of artists and photographers documenting Kiowa life. The rendering exemplifies John Hauser’s refined draftsmanship and use of color to emphasize the sitter’s strength and cultural identity.
